How to Create Barcodes in Illustrator

Book covers, packaging, labels, and posters all need barcodes — and if you design in Adobe Illustrator, you need a way to add print-ready codes without leaving your document. This guide covers the three ways to do it, step by step.

Your three options

1. A barcode extension (recommended)

A CEP extension like All Barcode Generator creates vector barcodes directly in your Illustrator document. Check digits are calculated automatically, output is true vector, and you stay in your artwork the whole time. Best for designers who add barcodes regularly.

2. A free online generator

Use our free barcode generator to create a PNG or SVG, then place it in Illustrator. Fine for occasional use, but raster files can look soft in print and you lose the ability to edit in place.

3. Barcode fonts

Free barcode fonts exist, but they rarely handle check digits or quiet zones correctly — which means codes that can fail to scan at checkout. For retail packaging this is the riskiest option.

Step-by-step with an extension

    Install the extension

    Download the ZXP and install with Anastasiy's Extension Manager or ZXPInstaller. Restart Illustrator.

    Open the panel

    Go to Window > Extensions > Barcode Generator.

    Choose your barcode type

    Retail? EAN-13 (outside North America) or UPC-A (North America). Books? ISBN-13. Anything else? CODE128, QR, Data Matrix, and more.

    Enter your value

    For EAN-13 and UPC-A, enter 12 digits and the extension appends the check digit automatically — or 13 digits and it validates.

    Adjust for print

    Allow for ink spread on press, keep the code pure black on white, and keep the quiet zone (the empty margin) intact.

    Place or export

    Click Generate to add the vector barcode to your document, or export SVG for press, PNG/JPG/WEBP for web.

Five rules for barcodes that scan

  • Keep barcodes pure black on a white background — colored codes fail in retail scanners.
  • Never stretch or distort the code; scale proportionally only.
  • Respect the quiet zone — the empty margin around the code is part of the spec.
  • Always verify the check digit (most generators do this for you).
  • For offset printing, ask your printer to compensate for ink spread so bars don't thicken when ink spreads.
